Migrating this list from sourceforge to a google group?

Chris Mungall
What do people think of this?
https://github.com/OBOFoundry/OBOFoundry.github.io/issues/435

Note that I'm currently unable to access the list of subscribers to this
list, even though I'm an admin, so I wouldn't be able to do a mass move
of everyone. If we did decide to move, then people would have to manage
their own move (though I'd consider auto-subscribing all contacts for
non-obsolete ontologies).

Bill Hogan
Fine by me.  If you just email this list with a link and subscription instructions for the new list, I think that would suffice.

Note that we already have a Google group that was acting as a mirror.

https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!forum/obo-discuss

Can't get at the manage tab atm, since I'm on the phone but I expect there already at least a couple of other admins on it. Will check later.

This is a good idea. However, Google groups doesn't allow automated
(through API) subscriptions (nor does it allow any kind of API at all).
I have an issue like that for a dynamic list of an average of 500
people… There is a way to mass-invite too, but it is somewhat limited.

Other than that, it works well. It is not well documented but for people
that don't want a google account and want to use the email version of
the list, they have to send an email to:

<nameofthelist>+[hidden email]

This is not easy to find in the google help.

Is that worth it to make an archive of the sourceforge list somewhere
5Helse?

Some people even did a transfer directly into google groups (but that's
a long and error-prone process if the list archive is big):

Yes, I think we'd have to leave it to most people to migrate themselves,
and mass-subscribe any remaining people who need to be on the list
(contacts for active ontologies).

good tip, thanks

We have been mirroring since about 2013 (thanks Alan!)
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/obo-discuss

I'm not sure the mirror was reliable enough to mirror everything though.

I'd like to do some kind of bulk download of the sf list but not sure we
can commit to that
